An example of the maker's "R1" class of locomotive with 12" diameter outside cylinders, 917 was ex-works from the Bristol company on 16 January 1902 and supplied to Cranshaw and Warburton Ltd., Shawcross Colliery, Ossett, Yorkshire.

917 returned to its makers in 1930 presumably for overhaul before sale to Albright and Wilson Ltd., Oldbury, whose works produced phosphorous.

The works at Oldbury was connected via a branch railway from Langley Green on the former Great Western Railway between Smethwick, Strourbridge and beyond. Prior to the arrival of 917 the works had only seen the usage of a locomotive, in this case a Manning Wardle 0-4-0 ST, during the latter part of World War I when traffic was heavy, prior to this horses had been in use for shunting wagons.

917 was joined by another Peckett in 1940 at a time when traffic must have increased with the war efforts again. With 917 in need of overhaul a Barclay 0-4-0 ST was borrowed from plant hirers Abelson Ltd., Sheldon, Birmingham in 1954 and that was returned and swapped, this time for Pecktt 0-4-0 ST. This toing and froing at lest enabled 917 to again return to the place if its birth for another overhaul.

Photographic evidence shows a smart 917 in standard Peckett lined out green livery ready for return to Oldbury in 1955. The hire loco was returned to Abelson leaving 917 to spend the remainder of its industrial career in company with one and then another diesel.

917 was placed on permanant loan to Chasewater, arriving 4 August 1976. Sadly despite some dismantling taking place 917 is currently in open store.
